Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention
Your chimney takes more weather than any other part of the roof. It stands above everything else, so it wears first. These are the things worth ringing us about.
- Gaps in the mortar - if you can see dark lines between the bricks of your stack, the pointing has worn away.
- Mortar on the ground - sandy lumps on your path or in your gutter have usually fallen from the chimney.
- A pot that leans or rocks - the bed holding your chimney pot has cracked and wants renewing.
- Plants growing from the stack - roots in the brickwork open the joints on your chimney further each year.
- Damp on the chimney breast - a stain indoors that comes and goes with the weather points to your stack or its lead.
- Lead lifting at the base - flashing that has come away where your chimney meets the roof lets rain straight in.

The usual causes are failed lead where the stack meets the roof, cracked flaunching round the pots, or open mortar joints letting rain soak into the brickwork. An unused flue with no cap or vent can also cause it. We check all of these on your chimney and tell you which one it is.
Not always. A slight lean that has been there for decades can sometimes be left or repointed. A stack with loose bricks, or one that has moved recently, needs dealing with promptly. Ring us and we will look at yours for free.
Yes. The stack can be taken down below the roof line and the roof made good over it, or lowered and capped. If your house is listed or in a conservation area, or the stack is shared with next door, check what consent you need first.
Usually, yes. A chimney is the highest and most exposed part of your roof, and safe access to it normally means a scaffold. You will know what your chimney needs after the free roof check.
